  1. I called her memaw. Memaw was the most loving grandmother a child could ask for. She always spoiled my brothers and I with root beer floats. I would stay the night with her and watch “Who’s like is it anyway” and “George Lopez” with her until midnight when she said it was her bedtime. I don’t think she ever cared to watch those shows, but only watched them with me to spend time with me. Or maybe I was the one who didn’t understand the shows and I was watching them because I couldn’t watch Hannah Montana.

Anytime there was a Christmas gathering, we would participate in a White-Elephant gift trading game. As kids, the grandchildren would sit in the living room and play with our new toys and watch NASCAR races from months ago because uncle Glen didn’t turn the TV off. We could not stop laughing when Memaw (Ruth) started laughing because you could hear it echo across the entire house. It was a chain reaction of laughter when someone made Memaw laugh.

She sure knew how to love people with kindness, gentleness, and patience. I have never seen her treat a single person with ill-intent.

Memaw, I love you. Thank you for being the glue to our family and leading our family gatherings. Things will never be the same without you. I look forward to eating root beer floats and watching TV together again someday.

P.S. I’m sorry for accidentally closing the car door on your fingers when I was a kid. I still feel bad about that to this day.

  2. I never got to meet Ruth personally, but I always heard sweet stories about her from dating Nathan. Just seeing her pictures, I could tell she was a sweet soul and touched the lives of many. It brings me joy to know one day the Nowlin family will see her again, dancing with Jesus. I pray for healing among the hurting hearts right now but I am glad she is fully healed and resting peacefully with the Lord.
