Dr. A. Russell Borgmann
HURST – Dr. A. Russell Borgmann, age 95, passed away Thursday, September 26, 2013 after a short and painless illness. The family had a private memorial. He had a long, fulfilling life as a family man, educator, and scientist. He was born in Longmont, Colorado on the family farm and left at age 17, hitchhiking his way for a $100 scholarship to Kansas State University where he eventually earned three masters degrees, a PhD and a DVM. His career started in Newark, Delaware at DuPont doing cancer research. Later, he moved on to Eaton Laboratories/Norwich Pharmaceuticals where he was the inventor of Macrodantin in 1968, which is an antibiotic still widely used today to treat UTI’s. The third and final stage in his career brought him to Ft. Worth, Texas and Alcon Laboratories. After retiring, he took off to travel the world. The last seven years he has been playing contract bridge at the Bedford Boys Ranch with a group of people he truly enjoyed and he also regularly worked out at the Hurst Senior Center. August Russell Borgmann was born to Lily Swanson and August F. Borgmann on December 21, 1917 as the oldest of seven children. He was married to Jeanne Frances James on June 27, 1942 until she passed in 1984. He married again to Lila Cleaver until she passed in 1993. Russell is survived by his only child, daughter Barbara A. Stephens of Hurst, TX, two granddaughters Stefanie A. Stephens of Watauga, TX and Patricia Stephens Huckabee of North Richland Hills, TX. He also has three great-grandchildren, Kristin Farris (24) and John Robert Stanphill III (21) of Euless, Texas and Emma Huckabee (5), of North Richland Hills. Russell is also survived by Howard Borgmann of Broomfield, Colorado, Martha Hopp of Longmont, Colorado and Shirley Borgmann of San Louis Valley, Colorado. The family wishes to extend great thanks for the cards received and condolences expressed by so many friends. They also wish to express gratitude to Dr. Davis, Dr. Long and Dr. Siram and to all the wonderful doctors and nurses in the ER, in ICU and the Oncology department of HEB Hospital as well as Universal Hospice in Ft. Worth, Texas for the astounding care and comfort you provided…you are the best of the best.
