Ronald Gene Olsen
Denton, TX – Ronald Gene Olsen died peacefully after a struggle with pneumonia, on February 20, 2023, at Medical City Denton. He was born on March 9,1953 in Ft. Worth TX. Ron is predeceased by his father Gene Olsen. Ron is survived by his mother, Myrna Olsen, his sister Jeanine Langford, and her husband David, his sister and guardian Debbie Baker and her husband Allan, his brother, Gary Olsen and his spouse Michie Akin; brother, Bill Olsen and his wife Lisa, and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Ron was the oldest in the Olsen family. At a young age it became clear that he was intellectually disabled. Growing up he enjoyed riding his bike and visiting various neighbors. He particularly loved dogs and knew all the neighbor’s dogs quite well. He enjoyed attending a camp for special needs children for several summers and frequently received an award for being a Lover of Nature. Ron was admitted to the Denton State Supported Living Center in 1972 where he received medical and residential care. Numerous staff knew Ron and he has been described by many as a sweet and friendly man. One of his favorite things was walking all over the DSSLC campus and giving hugs. He had a knack for telling you like it is and had a great sense of humor. Ron always looked forward to weekend home visits. Once the calendar of weekend visits for the year had been determined, he did not forget. He was a simple man: two cokes a day, a pipe smoke, his freedom to go about as he pleased, and he was content. Ron will be deeply missed by his birth family as well as his family at the Denton State Supported Living Center. We know that he is in a better place, is finally healed and has the freedom to do what he pleases. A private family service will be held later at the DFW National Cemetery where his urn will be placed with our father.
