Robert B. "Bob" Mayfield Jr.
CLEBURNE — Robert B. “Bob” Mayfield Jr. was welcomed into heaven on Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012. When greeted by the Lord, we know beyond a shadow of a doubt that his faith in Jesus Christ and the life he lived resulted in a hardy “well done good and faithful servant.” Service: 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Cleburne with private family burial at a later date. Visitation: There will be a visitation at the conclusion of Monday’s celebratory service. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Bob’s memory to Lottie Moon Missions, IMB, 3806 Monument Ave., P.O. Box 6767, Richmond, Va. 23230-0767. Bob was born May 18, 1922, in Liberty Hill. His parents, Robert Sr. and Permelia Mayfield, along with siblings, Marian Rosenbauer, and Shelley Mayfield, all preceded him in death. Bob spent happy childhood years in Seguin. He became head of the Mayfield household at age 18 upon his father’s death. Enrolling at Texas A&M (class of ’45) was one of the happiest days of his life. His education was interrupted by World War II. He served his country honorably and proudly in the European invasion. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. After the war, Bob returned to Texas A&M to complete his education by earning a degree in civil engineering and became a member of the Army Corps of Engineers and the Texas Society of Professional Engineers. Anyone spending time with Bob would soon discover how proud he was to be an Aggie. He spent many weekends visiting Belton where he dated the love of his life, Neta Sawyer, a coed at the University of Mary Hardin Baylor. They married on June 19, 1949. They remained happily married until his beloved Neta’s death in 2003. While in San Antonio, Bob worked for Zachry Construction Corporation. In 1961, he completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard University. The Mayfields attended Manor Baptist where they made lifelong friends. In 1964, the Mayfield family moved to Cleburne which remained his home until his death. Because of his love of Cleburne he became involved in many civic and church activities. The Mayfield family joined First Baptist Church where he served as chairman of deacons, Sunday school teacher for over 40 years, and numerous positions of responsibility. Bob was the business manager of the Kimbro Clinic where he helped grow the practice into a regional health facility. In 1975, Bob became partner with Hunter Pearson at Crosier- Pearson Funeral Home. Several years later, Bob became sole owner of the business and soon after renamed Crosier Pearson Mayfield Funeral Home. With its success, Bob opened a second funeral home, Mayfield Kiser in Burleson. Bob left an indelible mark on the community and volunteering became an important part of his life. Several of his activities included: president, Rotary Club, District Rotarian of the Year in 1975, and Johnson County A&M Club. Bob was elected to the Cleburne City Council and served several terms. He and Neta provided endowed scholarships at Mary Hardin Baylor and Texas A&M and was a trustee at University of Mary Hardin Baylor for many years. Bob served as a member of the board of directors for the Cleburne Economic Development Foundation and many other civic organizations. More significant than the impact he had on the city, was the impact he had on the lives he touched. He was a loving father who taught his children to love, honor and serve God. He was a playful grandfather who possessed endless energy and always made time for them. It is impossible to list all of the things he did to make us laugh, inspire us, and make us grateful for having a dad and grandfather who loved as much as he did. Survivors: He is survived by Marsha Mayfield Lockett and husband, David, of Austin; Mary Nash Walker and husband, Steve, of Temple; and son, Robert B. Mayfield III and wife, Kim, of Burleson. Bob is also survived by six grandchildren, Jay Lockett and wife, Danna, of Piano; his favorite granddaughter, Lauren Lockett of Austin; Matthew Walker of Dolores, Colo.; Andrew Walker of Dallas; and Michael and Reece Mayfield of Burleson.

  1. Uncle Bob was always a calming source of strength for me and I will greatly miss him. He helped me through some tough times when I was in Afghanistan because he too had been through war, and I knew he would help me through my hard times as well. And he did. I will hold him forever in my heart and know that he is with his beloved wife and family in heaven. I will see him again some day. Gig ‘Em Uncle Bob!

  3. Loved reading the obituary and thinking about all the good times with Bob and Neta. What an honorable life they lived. What friends. How we will miss them in this world, but know that they are receiving the reward of our loving Heavenly Father. May we all gather at the river. Mary Alice and Charlie

  9. Bob Mayfield was a great man. He was my friend Robert’s dad and I got to see him often during my grade school years. Whenever I got to spend the night at Robert’s house, I was invited to participate in his family’s evening devotionals, led by Mr. Mayfield. This was the first (and most important) of many examples he helped me to set in my life. He often took Robert and I squirrel hunting in Marble Falls and spent a lot of time with both of us. When considering colleges and careers and a possible appointment to West Point, Mr. Mayfield counseled me and helped me to consider Texas A&M. My years at A&M were some of the best and I owe a lot to Mr. Mayfield for his direction. His wife was also one of my teachers and always took so much interest in me. His daughters were older than I but were always complimentary. And I am proud to be able to consider Robert one of my oldest friends. To be a part of Mr. Mayfield’s life was a privilege, to be helped by him an honor. While sad at the news of his passing, I rejoice for his reunion with Mrs. Mayfield! Thank you, Mr. Mayfield.

  11. Mary Nash and Steve,
My heart has been heavy since learning of first hospice being called, and then the passing of your father. You have both been in my thoughts and prayers constantly. It was very touching to read your father’s obituary and learn more about the man that you often spoke of with such honor, love and pride. May God comfort you as only he can.

  15. What a splendid video of a very special gentleman and the memories it invokes of his great loves — Neta, children, and fishing. Bob lived life to the fullest and gave credit to others for the good life he lived. We cherish his memory and are thankful for his friendship.

  17. We were so sorry to learn of Bob’s passing. We were fortunate to know him as a wonderful parent of his children we taught. Bob knew my parents’ family (Patsy) where they grew up in Seguin. He will be greatly missed in our community of Cleburne.

  19. Bob was really special to our family. He helped us out so much during the last few years. Steve & I saw him out in the driveway about 2 months ago & stopped to visit with him and he called us both by name. Such a sweet man. We were so very sorry to learn of your loss. We know there is nothing we can really say to lessen your pain. Just want you to know your family is very much in our thoughts and prayers. During this time of loss, may God’s daily presence minister to your every need.
