Neva Lee Selby Shelton, 84, passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early morning hours of November 11, 2022, after a year-long battle with cancer. A family memorial will be held November 20 in Denton, TX. Her brother-in-law, Terry Shelton, will officiate. Neva was born on Christmas Eve, 1937 to Charles Selby, Sr. (Carl) and Mozell Douthit Selby in Foster, OK. She attended Pernell, OK schools, graduating from Pernell High School in 1955. Shortly after her graduation, she moved to Oklahoma City. It was there, in early 1956, that she went on a blind date and met Jimmy Shelton. They eloped to Gainesville, TX on June 23, 1956, embarking on a journey that would span 66+ years. Shortly after their marriage, Jimmy enlisted in the US Air Force and spent 18 months in Germany. Upon his return in 1958, he was stationed in Antigo, WI, where he and Neva had their first child, a son. They returned to Oklahoma in mid-1960 and three years later, added a daughter to their young family. They made Oklahoma City their home until 1975, when they moved to Chico, TX. Jimmy and Neva lived in Chico until December 2002 when they moved to Denton, TX where they would spend the rest of their days together. Neva retired from Mitchell Energy Corporation in 1990. She returned to work at FEMA in 1996, retiring (again) in 2014. She was an avid reader, loved to crochet and sew and she spent many hours making handmade gifts for those who were special to her. Neva was a life-long member of the Church of Christ. Neva was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Gloria Henderson and her brother, Gail Selby. Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 66 years, Jimmy Shelton, Sr.; son Jimmy Shelton, Jr. and daughter and son-in-law Johnna and Michael Sweet, all of Denton; grandsons Justin Shelton and his wife Devin of Paradise, TX; Matthew Shelton and Jackson Sweet, both of Denton; Austin Sweet and his wife Roberta of McAlester, OK and granddaughter Rebekah Sweet of Cookeville, TN; great grandsons Ryker and Hayes Shelton; Marcus and Duncan Sweet; Hayden, Brock, Simon, Isaac and Abel Krause and great-granddaughter Juniper Shelton. Neva is also survived by her sisters Florene Selby of Newcastle, OK and Peggy James of Lubbock, TX, her brother Charles Selby, Jr. of Moore, OK and her sister-in-law, Fern Selby of Mustang, OK, as well as several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations in Neva’s memory to the American Cancer Society or the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society would be appreciated. Cremation arrangements by Lone Star Cremation.
