Kurt Gregory Marsh
Kurt Gregory Marsh Sr., “Majik” August 20, 1968 – April 7, 2014 Then I heard a voice from heaven say, “Write: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.” “Yes,” says the Spirit, “they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them.” Revelation 14:13 Kurt Gregory Marsh Sr. was a man born bearing many blessings. Born in 1968 to Mathilda Stevens-Harvey and Kenneth Marsh Sr., he was a talented man; intelligent, kind, determined, joyous, respectful and respected. “Majik” – as he was called among his friends and relatives in his birthplace, the US Virgin Islands – walked with the kind of energy that could turn any grey skies blue. As he entered the room you couldn’t help but feel the high spirited vibes that came with him. Always able to bless someone with a smile, laugh, and even a good rap, Kurt was a gem. Most will remember him for this very wholesome character, whether it’s in the form of a rap, joke, dance move, or his genuine million dollar smile. A family man, Kurt learned from his parents the qualities needed to survive in this world, or the next, all the while keeping his faith at the forefront. He learned to hunt the hills of St. John, fish its waters, plant its valleys, and sing its cultural songs of enlightenment. He’d always say “through me out in the wild, and I’ll survive!” He was very well acquainted with the word of God, and the teachings of his parents as they both carried him through life. After earning his Associates degree (cum laude) in Accounting Management from Monroe College in New York in 1988, Kurt returned to the Virgin Islands where he became an involved community member. Majik served as his son’s elementary school Parent/Teacher Organization President, coached young men’s basketball teams, served as a certified FEMA aid, and engaged in local charitable work. His ambitions would later lead him to pursue many ventures to include his once famous smoothie stand in his home town of Coral Bay, obtaining a VI taxi license and his realtor’s license, opening a fragrance business, and he also dabbled in auto sales, jewelry sales, and the construction industry for a spell. Kurt was an all inclusive entrepreneur-family-community-man to say the least. As much as Kurt will be remembered for his talents, his character, and his ambitions, he will most live on through his seven beautiful children: Kirtrice Marsh, Irvin Marsh, Kasiem Marsh, Le-Jay Butler-Marsh, Kurt Gregory Marsh Jr., Chandi Marsh, and Jendaya Marsh. A proud man, everyone who knew Kurt knows that his most prized accomplishment was fathering his children. He’d boast about what qualities he passed on to them, how well they did in school, and how like him, they are brilliant minds. A man of God, he instilled in his children, whenever he could, the importance of keeping a strong faith and upholding Christian virtues. Though he didn’t spend nearly as much time as he hoped with all his children, he loved them with all he had, and so is the way they love him. In his last days his discussions, thoughts, dreams, all were conceived through his lifelong dream of being near his children. Kurt Gregory Marsh Sr., Majik, blazed a trail like no other. His life was one lived in enjoyment, accomplishment, and faith. His pain and suffering is at its end and we will remember him as he was: an ambitious, caring, engaging person. In the sweet by and by……we shall meet him again……on those beautiful shores.
