Jewell Cleveland Volkman
BURLESON — Jewell C. Volkman, 92, died peacefully on Saturday, May 25, 2013. Graveside service: 10 a.m. Wednesday in Perryman Cemetery in Forestburg. Visitation: 6 p.m. Tuesday at Mayfield Kiser Funeral Home in Burleson. J.C. was born Feb. 7, 1921, in Forestburg to Viola Pearl and Julius Ceasar Volkman. In 1939 he and wife, Bertha, moved to Maywood, Calif., where they lived for over 20 years. J.C. Volkman was a resident of Bowie for 25 years, from the early ’60s to the mid-80s, where he owned Volkman Lumber and Mechanical Contracting Companies and Volkman Furniture and Appliance Store. During his career, J.C. was a major regional contractor, building many homes, schools, hospitals, nursing homes and commercial and residential projects across the North Texas. J.C. and wife, Bertha, were active for many years in the Bowie Chamber of Commerce where they were named Man and Woman of the Year in 1974. J.C. was a lifelong Methodist and member of the First United Methodist Church of Burleson where he resided for many years. During World War II he served in the United States Army. J.C. led by example, enjoyed life to the fullest, traveled the world and devoted himself to his family. J.C. was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Bertha Ensey; brothers, Donald and Kermit Volkman; and sister, Azalea Oliver. Survivors: He is survived by many nieces and nephews who experienced a lifetime of his generous, giving nature and who were mentored by him in business and in life.
