    1. That’s a touching condolence, ha! Granny will be remembered for a lot of things, that was one of them, lol. We know you loved her as we all did. I don’t remember if she ever whipped me, she always said I was such a good boy and told yall you should be more like me, lol. I can’t express how much I miss the Christmases at Granny’s house. Her love for Grandaddy and all her children and grandchildren lives on as her legacy. I miss you Granny and Grandaddy, and all our family who have gone to Heaven since. See you later!

  1. Granny Mac’s house always had the aroma of food cooking or being cooked. Some of My fondest memories were with Granny and Poopy. You couldn’t walk into Granny’s house with-out walking out so full you promised not to eat for a week.I loved you Granny and will miss you.Once again you and Poopy will be together.

  2. One day, when I was visiting Grannie at her house (about 25 years ago), she had prepared baked sweet potatoes.

  3. I only wish that the whippings I got were with a loaf of bread or butcher knife; my choice was chinaberry tree switch or belt (and it didn’t matter which end.)

  4. I can recall my Mother getting so excited when Mondays would come around because Aunt Jennie was comming. We knew after dinner we had to hit the back door and go play so she had her sister to herself. You could hear them laughing and having a ball.

When I would take Mom to Aunt Jennie’s we had to be sure to come for dinner. She fixed so much good food.I enjoyed just watching them talk and laugh. They just beamed !

    I miss those times.

  5. 2 things:

    1. How many times did I hear this?

G: “Mac, don’t you want some (beans, potatoes, corn, bread, whatever she happened to be looking at)?

    P: “No”

    G: “Well why not?”

P: “Do you want to go run around the block with a bucket over your head?”

    G: “Well no…”

    P: “Well why not?”

    2. Trying to get out of her how to cook things

R: “Granny, how do you make those candied sweet potatoes?” (I never knew that almost everyone cooks them in the oven. When I tell them I do it on the cooktop in a skillet they look at me like I’ve got three heads)

G: “Well, you just cut ’em up and put some sugar and butter on “em and cook ’em.”

    R: “Cut ’em how?”

G: “Oh I don’t know, about a quarter of an inch thick, I guess”

    R: “How much butter?”

G: “Oh, I don’t know, enough to make ’em float, you know”

    R: “OK, how much sugar?”

    G: ” Oh, I don’t know, you can’t hardly use too much”

R: “Well, give me an idea”

G: “Oh, I don’t know, just cover ’em up and add a layer and cover them up and keep doing that till the skillet’s full”

R: “How long do I cook them? How will I know when they’re done?”

G: “Well, you’ll just know, that’s all. You can just kinda tell.”

    R: “No I can’t, how do I know?”

G: “Just wait till they’re soft and turn dark orange”

R: “How soft and how dark?”

    G: “You’ll know”

AARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!!!! She just couldn’t fathom the magic she had in those hands. Nobody, before or since, has ever made candied sweet potatoes (or anything else) like she did. I’ve gotten pretty good at it after 20 years or so of practice, but the people I’ve served them to always ask how I ever learned to make such fabulous, one-of-a-kind sweet potatoes and I tell them the Granny story. You can’t buy that kind of experience in your life for any amount of money, and she dispensed them in copious quantities to all of us. Thank you, Granny, I love you more than words could ever have told you. Give the McFarland men and hug and kiss for me. I know you’ve seen my Daddy’s face by now, and I envy you that. Can’t wait to see him myself. God shines His light on you now, and I envy you that, too.

    Till then,

    “my little Randy”

  6. It was one of the happiest days of my life when I met Grannie and Poopy. Grannie put her hands on my cheeks drew me to her and gave me a big sweet kiss and said she loved me. I told her that one of the things I wanted to see real bad was all of her little shoes she kept under her bed. 🙂

  7. I have so many memories of Granny, from the time I was a little girl hiding in my Moms closet calling Granny crying because my Dad was going to shoot my horse!

  8. When I was Married To Gene”Bugs” everytime I would go to Granny”s she always told me I was to skinny and would not let me leave until I actually sat down and ate.I have

  10. I remember Great Grannie and the fun times we had at her house. I thought it was so neat to go over there, because it seemed like there was always about 20 people there and I thought that was so neat. There was not a time when I went over there that I didn’t walk in and she wasn’t cooking. She also had a candy dish that was always full and that we always wanted.

  11. Jennie McFarland is now living a new life of peace, love and joy found with our Lord in Heaven, and with Mr. McFarland, Louie, Hank, Eugene, and so many loved ones. What a blessing it is to help this wonderful McFarland Family to celebrate Jennie’s beautiful new life, and to know that one day we will all be seeing her there in her new heavenly body. We praise God for the privilege of knowing Jennie here, and just thank the Lord for creating this precious, loving and kind-to-everyone person, who, together with her husband, raised five of the greatest children we’ve ever known. Walt and I are so thankful to have Wendell as a dear brother-in-law. We love you, Wendell–and we love Leo, Beverly and Eveline–and all the McFarland Family. You are in our hearts forever, with so much love. Moddy
