Viola Rowell
FORT WORTH — Viola Rowell went home to the Lord on Monday, Dec. 28, 2015. Funeral: Noon Tuesday, Jan. 5, at Mayfield Kiser Funeral Home. Interment: Crowley Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 6 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials: If desired, memorial donations may be made to Crowley House of Hope, P.O. Box 300, Crowley, Texas 76036. Viola was born Sept. 13, 1923, in Tolar to Lenora and Archie Musick. Upon graduating from Tolar High School she joined the World War II support efforts and began working as a riveter at Consolidated Vultee Bomber Plant in Fort Worth. While there, she was given the nickname of “Jackie” which stayed with her throughout her life. In 1945, she married Afton W. “Shorty” Cook and they began a family in Crowley. After Shorty passed away, Viola worked and saved to send the children, Joe and Norma, through college, an achievement of which they all were very proud. Viola enjoyed a long and active life. She was a member and officer of many charitable organizations including the Golden Eagles Fellowship Group, Crowley First United Methodist Choir and the Crowley Senior Citizens Association. She was a founder of the Crowley House of Hope where she served on the board of directors for many years. The Tolar area remained close to her heart and Viola kept close ties with her extended family there and faithfully attended the annual Tolar homecoming event. Viola was an integral part of achieving Texas Historic Landmark status for the Antioch Cemetery in Hood County where her parents and many family members have been laid to rest. Everyone at Crowley United Methodist Church fondly calls her “Jackie” as they have done for the over 60 years she has been a dedicated and devoted church member. After her retirement from Sears Roebuck & Company she often traveled with Gerry Stevens and friends to explore numerous states and Mexico. In 1997 Viola met Stanley C. Rowell at Crowley Senior Citizens Center. Soon after, they married and remained actively involved with the center. They also spent countless fun hours dancing together throughout Texas. Viola and Stan flourished as a couple and Stan’s family came to know and love Viola. She provided loving care to Stan as his memory failed during the last years of his life and in 2014 they moved from Fort Worth to Chisholm Trail Retirement Community in Keene. Viola was preceded in death by husband, Shorty Cook; their children, Norma and Joseph Cook; and husband, Stan Rowell. Survivors: Viola will be greatly missed by her stepchildren, Stanley and Diane Rowell, Betty and Paul Underwood, JoAnne and Frank Myers, Gene and Risa Rowell, and their children and grandchildren. She is also survived by nephew, Don Clark and wife, Wanda. An extended family of loving cousins and faithful friends will dearly miss her presence.
