Joseph Benjamin Swofford
Joseph Benjamin Swofford entered eternity with his Savior on October 3, 2014. He was born in Kernville, California, to Carroll Wayne Swofford and Roberta Lee Dill Swofford on January 27, 1950. He was born again at the age of 25. Joe grew up in the desert of southern California in a strong Bible-believing family who devoted their lives to singing and preaching God’s Word. It was in this environment that he developed a deep love for Southern Gospel music. He learned how to play the piano by ear, as did his mother. His father taught shaped-note sight-reading for singing schools all over the country where he and his brothers would sing. They recorded an album in 1962 on a 33 LP record. They also competed in a talent search contest against a number of other groups throughout California to win the opening act for the Blackwood Brothers. Although Joe was the high tenor of the group in his youth, he became a rich bass singer later in his life. Joseph continued the family traditions in music with his own two daughters, traveling the country to sing for church services, revivals, youth camps, and singings. They recorded four albums together from 1984 to 1990. Joe was also an accomplished songwriter and won the Southern Gospel Music Association’s Songwriter of the Year Award in 1987 for his song Mercy. His gospel music continued with the group, The New Harbingers, from Macomb, Oklahoma. Joe loved to fish, hunt, golf, work on cars, and travel the country. He loved hard and he fought hard. His family was his life, but his faith was his existence. Joseph was preceded in death by his mother, father, his brother, Richard, and his sister, Carol. He is survived by his daughters Lisa Baugh and husband, Adam; and Joanna Murphy and husband, Michael, both of Burleson, TX; 5 grandchildren Dylon, Jordan, Ryan, Macy and Payton. He is also survived by his brothers John and wife, Patty, of Fresno, California; and Joel and wife, Renee, of Springtown, TX; sister Rebecca Walker and husband, Kevin, of Prague, OK; nieces Donna Massey of Clovis, California; and Barbara Swofford of Springtown, TX; and nephews David Swofford of Fresno, California; John Swofford of Azle, TX; and Jacob Gamel of Oklahoma City, OK. Daughters, Lisa and Joanna, wish to thank everyone at the Hospice House in Burleson, Texas, for taking such excellent care of their dad, Joe. He was treated like royalty. Joe is now alive and whole in eternity with the Lord. He is running on streets of gold to forever sing the praises of his Savior, Jesus Christ. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Community Hospice of Texas, 6100 Western Place, Suite 500, Fort Worth, TX 76107.

  1. My sincere condolences to the family for your loss. It is my heartfelt prayer that God give the family peace in your quiet moments and comfort to replace your grief. Draw comfort from God’s loving provision of the resurrection, for Christ promised, “I Am The Resurrection and The Life. He that exercises faith in me, even though he dies, Will Come To Life.” (John 11:25) May God’s promise that death will soon be no more, give you hope and bring you peace. Revelation 21:4 guarantees, “And He (God) will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and Death Will Be No More, neither will mourning, nor outcry, nor pain, be anymore…” Until then, may these promises from God give you hope and bring you peace.
