Harry Davis Lawing
Harry Davis Lawing (Paw Paw) was born June 22, 1926 at the Stage Coach Inn in Johnson Station, Texas. He passed from this life September 10, 2013 in Burleson, Texas. His parents were Albert Nelson Lawing and Rosie Pearl Pummill Lawing. He was the youngest of ten children. His family farmed the land on what is now the area between Mayfield Road and Interstate 20 on Cooper Street. Harry graduated from Arlington High School in 1944. He married Betty Jo Shiflett in June of 1945 after a short courtship. They resided in Johnson Station for the first few years of marriage. Their best friends were Sonny and Mary Bradley and they continued that friendship until their deaths. He was very close to his brothers, Arthur, Ray, Herman, Joe, Albert, Byron, Everett, Leslie and his sister Bessie and their spouses and loved their children. All of his siblings except Leslie have preceded him in death. Paw Paw’s personality was such that as his daughter would say, “He could talk to a post.” He never met a stranger and was able to make any and all feel as if they had known him forever.      Harry opened a Texaco Service Station and then a Conoco Station on Abram Street which he owned until 1966. During that time he and Betty had five beautiful children, Pamela, David, Lana, Mark and J R. The kids always loved to go help daddy work (supposedly) at the station. Usually all they really did was eat all his snacks and drink as much coke as possible. They also rode the lift up and down, put the towels through the wringer and occasionally spilled gas on customer’s cars when trying to fill their tanks. When David got old enough though, he had to really work at the service station after school rather than play.    In 1966 Harry worked for Wynn’s Car Care Products and moved the family to Sulphur Springs, Texas for 2 years, much against his children’s wishes! At that point it was either move and support the family or stay where the kids wanted and not work. So of course they packed up and moved to a place that turned out to be a great place for kids to grow up. Many adventures happened in and around the large boarding house they lived in for 2 years. While living in Sulphur Springs Betty went to nursing school and Harry continued to sell automotive products in the Texas, Arkansas Oklahoma area. While they lived in Sulphur Springs Pamela married Mike Logsdon, that was the Christmas we kids got a brother in law and wedding clothes. We kids were not very merry. In 1968 the family moved back to Arlington and Harry opened a Wynn’s franchise with his long-time friend, Curtis Skinner. After the Wynn’s franchise closed, he worked for Curtis for many years before having to go on disability at the age of 53 due to heart problems. During this time in Arlington the rest of the kids got married and went out on their own. Lana married Jack Williams, David married Min Chong and after her death, Gay Martin, Mark married Patti Mitchell and J R married Judy Dimberg. Harry and Betty’s grandchildren are Brandy Logsdon who married Tod Smith, Christopher Logsdon who married Jennifer Bird, Caryn Mudge Baum, Jarrod Williams who married Stacey Keeton, Mary Williams who married Robbie Shepherd, Mark Lawing, Jr., Stephanie Lawing who married Chris Leigh, Bradley Lawing who married Trisha Alley, and Alexandra Lawing, who is the baby grandchild. Their 16 great grandchildren are Travis, Trae, Jacob, Jackson, Zachary, Rebecca, Robert, Aaron, Phoenix, Connor, Cayden, Cale, Charli, Xander, Avery and Kai. Paw Paw, as he was named by his first grandchild, Brandy, loved his grandchildren and they were always welcome in Harry and Betty’s house. He would always have fun things for them to do when they visited in Winnsboro, like riding the scooter, or drive the lawn mower, walk around downtown or go out to the bunkhouse and have a fun time until grandma came home to provide more fun with playing games and eating. Harry was baptized into Christ at a young age and was a faithful member of the Lord’s church all his life. He was active in several Church of Christ congregations through the years – Abrams Street, Park Row, Pantego, Sulphur Springs, Hillcrest, Mayfield Road, Winnsboro, and New York Avenue Church of Christ. He also served as an elder in the Lord’s church for several years at Mayfield Road and New York Avenue church of Christ. Harry always made sure he and his family attended every service. They were also active in the work of the Lord’s church. He made sure that his children were there with or even without him if he was out of town. He converted his daughter in laws and son in law. All his children and grandchildren are faithful, active members of the Lord’s church. One of his favorite scriptures was “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth” (3 John 1:4) and he did all he could in teaching and example to lead them to walk that way. When his children were small he kneeled down each night and prayed with them before they crawled into their safe and secure beds. Harry dearly loved Betty Jo, his wife of more than 50 years, who passed from this life in 2001.  Harry and Betty built a home that their children could always look forward to going home to. He loved his children and taught them to always stay faithful. He took seriously the Lord’s charge to raise his children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. He also taught his children in example and word the importance of working hard. He would tell them “I’ve given you the whole world to make a living in.” Harry loved the Lord and always wanted to do those things that were pleasing in His sight.
