Dr. Robert Donald Gold
On the morning of July 11, 2014, with his wife of 26 years, at his bedside, Dr. Robert Donald Gold, 83, passed away peacefully at Notice Care Homes in Mesquite, Texas. Dr. Robert Donald Gold was born in Lawton, OK on August 11, 1930. He was the fourth child and only son of the late Ruby Lewis Spearman and Ross Spearman. In 1938 he was adopted by the late Stella Westmoreland. He was preceded in death by sisters Margie Comer, Betty Jo Smith and Louise Young. Dr. Gold is survived by his wife Dr. Shelia Grant-Gold of Garland, TX; daughter, Dr. Valerie Gold-Neil and spouse Nichols J. Smith of Los Osos, CA; son, Robert Brent Gold and spouse Dr. Amalia Valle Villegas of Chandler, AZ; son, J.R. Gold of Livingston, MT; stepson Grant Rader of Waxahachie, TX. He leaves six grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren. Dr. Gold was a graduate of Casa Grande High School in Casa Grande, AZ. He earned B.A., M.A., and Doctor of Education degrees from Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ. Following his graduation, Dr. Gold co-conducted the Mexican American Counselor Education Program at Texas Tech in Lubbock, TX in 1970. This program had a positive impact on its participants, many of whom went on to become “change agents” within their local communities. Personal accounts of a number of these students can be found in the book, “The Rising Voices of Latino Change Agents in Education.” In 1973, Dr. Gold joined the faculty of East Texas State University, (ETSU), in Commerce, TX (now Texas A&M University-Commerce). He retired from ETSU in 1993 following 20 years of service. The impact of his teaching on the field of mental health continues to be demonstrated through the private practices of his many students. The family wishes to express its gratitude to Natalie Milas and staff of Notice Care Homes for the loving care provided to “Dr. Bob” in his final years. At his request his remains have been cremated. Funeral masses have been arranged by his family in Tempe, Arizona and surrounding areas. In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, American Heart Association or American Diabetes Association.   1. My condolences to Bob’s family. I remember him well as a colleague at the university who officed near me as well as a neighbor on Tanglewood.   2. I was moved to hear of the passing of my friend and professional partner, yet, I know that he is resting in peace after struggling with serious illnesses.   3. I just saw where one of my favorite professors, Dr. Bob Gold, has passed away. I am late
    finding this out but I will pray for all of his loved ones. He was a remarkable teacher.
