Clarence L “Pat” Patnoe
On Saturday, August 8, 2020, Pat Patnoe, loving husband and father passed away at his home near Granbury,Texas. He was 91 years old. Clarence Lavern (Pat) Patnoe was born on June 20, 1929 in White River, South Dakota to Ernest and Lois Patnoe. He grew up in Norris and White RIver South Dakota. During his high school years he was active in sports. He played football and ran track where he excelled. He held school track records for years. He was also a cheerleader for the boys basketball team. When asked why he was a cheerleader and not a basketball player, he simply replied, I’m not stupid, as a cheerleader I get to ride on the bus with the other cheerleaders. They were a lot prettier and smelled much nicer than the boys on their bus. Pat served honorably in the Korean war with the U.S. Army. During his time in Korea, he was the driver for a chaplain. In that role he spent many hours on the front line so he earned his points quickly to come home. When asked recently if there was anywhere in the world he would like to return to he said “the orphanages in Korea.” After he returned to the states he was employed by the Bell Telephone Company. He worked 30 years for that company. During his time with Bell Telephone Company he worked in Pierre, South Dakota. After a long day climbing telephone poles, he would then drive 3 hours to Rapid City, play a game of softball, and then drive 3 hours back so he could be at work the next day. Anyone who knew Pat well, knew how much he loved playing ball. When his crew was assigned to work in Newell, South Dakota, he met the love of his life, Fronna West. They were married in Belle Fourche, South Dakota on August 16th, 1958. They have spent 62 years loving each other. When Pat was 74 he decided he wanted to drive a school bus. He went to classes , passed, and drove for the Granbury, Texas school district until he was 84. Not one to sit idle, he started working for Walmart at the age of 85. He worked there for 4 years. Pat didn’t know how not to work, he taught his children and grandchildren the value of a strong work ethic. Pat was an active member of a Baptist church in every city where he lived. In the later years of his life one of his favorite acts of service was to work in the church kitchen helping with snacks during Vacation Bible School. Most Sunday mornings you could find him passing out bulletins and greeting everyone with his trademark smile and a warm handshake. Pat also helped to build many houses with Habitat for Humanity of Hood County. One of his prized possessions was his golden hammer pin that he received for helping build so many houses. Pat was preceded in death by both his parents, sister Eloise, and brother Larry. He is survived by his wife, Fronna and his sister Patricia (Virgil) Bechtold. He is also survived by his 3 loving daughters. Arie Patnoe Sparkman (Ray) and their children Chris Lee, and Greg Lee (Karen) great grandsons Benjamin and Greyson.
