Gary Boyd Moore
Gary Boyd Moore was born to George and Floetta Moore in Chickasha, Oklahoma on July 3, 1946. He was raised in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma where his father owned and operated George’s Radiator Shop. Gary grew up fishing, worked with his father in his radiator shop during the summer, helped his uncles and aunts harvest their crops, played high school football, bowled a perfect game his senior year, and excelled in science and math. He graduated Pauls Valley High School in 1964. Gary attended the University of Oklahoma before joining the Navy in 1966. At the Navy recruiters office in Ada, Oklahoma, they gave him a brochure on becoming a Polaris Sailor for the United States Navy. Gary voluntarily enlisted for six years of duty and was accepted into the Navy Nuclear Field Seaman Recruit Training Program. He completed Navy recruit training in San Diego and married Margaret Ann Pirtle of Norman, Oklahoma. Afterward, he was sent to Great Lakes, Illinois to attend Class A technical school. While waiting for his next school to start, he served six months with the United States Navy’s 6th fleet in the Mediterranean Sea aboard the destroyer USS Davis where he participated in the rescue and escort of the USS Liberty that was accidentally attacked by Israel in June of 1967. Following his tour, he resumed his studies in nuclear engineering, including Nuclear Power School in Bainbridge, Maryland; operational training at a prototype site and electronics technician school in West Milton, New York; and submarine school in New London, Connecticut. After completing his nuclear training, he was stationed in Charleston, South Carolina where he served on the “gold” crew for three years with the USS Alexander Hamilton, a nuclear Lafayette-class ballistic missile submarine. He loved the challenge involved in nuclear sub work and the adventure of touring many ports of interest like Spain, Italy, France, Greece, Crete, Malta, as well as the Caribbean and Puerto Rico. After 6 years of service, he left the Navy in 1972 and was hired by Carolina Power & Light at the newly constructed H.B. Robinson nuclear plant in Hartsville, South Carolina. While he enjoyed living in South Carolina working and raising three small children with his wife Margaret Ann, he began to look for employment closer to family in Oklahoma. In 1978, he was hired by TXU Electric as a chemist during the construction of the new Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant in Glen Rose, Texas. He was able to continue his love of the water by purchasing a home on Lake Granbury where the family enjoyed tubing, water skiing, fishing, boating, and catamaran sailing. He separated from Maggie and in 1993 remarried Terri Renae Carswell of Granbury. They made their home in Bluff Dale, Texas. Always a sailor, Gary continued his passion for the open water by charting sailboat adventures in the Caribbean and the Gulf. After 23 years of working for TXU, Gary spent time traveling by motorhome to salmon fish in Alaska during the summers, enjoyed his ten grandchildren and the quietness of small town living. After battling health issues for many years, he passed away December 30, 2024. He is survived by his brother, Glen Moore of California; his former wife, Terri Renae of Granbury; and his three children, Shannon Kinnon of Bluff Dale, Clifton Moore of McKinney, and Neil Moore of Southlake. He will be missed by his entire family.
