Mona Morgan Cathey
Mona Morgan Cathey, 83, passed away on Friday, February 2, 2024, in Arlington, Texas, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi, to W.H. and Ethel G. Morgan. Mona graduated from Jett High School in 1958 and also attended Hinds Community College. Mona began working for the federal government in Vicksburg in 1964, with the majority of her years being at the Social Security Administration. While there, she worked as a service and claims representative. In her time with Social Security, she met many fascinating individuals from Vicksburg’s population as well as making numerous lifelong friends. She retired in 2000. Mona had numerous hobbies and talents. She enjoyed oil painting, sewing, and belly dancing, as well as bowling in multiple leagues and playing basketball. Her love of basketball stayed with her her whole life and she loved to watch college games on TV as well as in person. One of her other passions was gardening, and she kept lovely gardens in Vicksburg as well as Arlington. She continued her love of gardening into her 80s. With her husband Jimmy, she moved to Arlington, Texas, in 2006. They joined St. John the Apostle United Methodist Church, where they were members of several groups. Mona is pre-deceased by her husband James A. (Jimmy) Cathey Sr., her parents, and her brother Jerry E. Golmon and his wife Edith. She is survived by her children Rhonda Reaves Green, Risa Cathey Weaver (David), James A. “Beau” Cathey, Jr. (Dee), Valeria Cathey Johnson (Bud), and Sharon Reaves Silva; sister-in-law Jo Anna Cathey Langford; grandchildren Ryan Green, Reese Green, Jacob Green, Erica Efferson, Brandon Ingram, Austin Weaver, Hunter Johnson (Lily), John Weaver (Kim), Christa Browning (Andrew), Samantha Silva, Nathaniel Silva, ten great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at St. John the Apostle United Methodist Church in Arlington, Texas.

  1. My heart is heavy at the loss of my dear friend but I rejoice in the knowledge that she is with our Savior, Jimmy and family. I smile when I remember her wry humor and the many good times we shared, especially with our Frances Hathorn Circle UMC and with our Bunko group. My prayers are with her family. Much love.   2. Sending prayers for the family I so sorry for y’all loss. I enjoyed every minute I got spend with her and husband. Whether game shows or football or ice skating. They are together again neither hurting anymore. I love them and they going to be miss so much.

  4. My love to you, Rhonda, and all of your Family on the loss of your Mother. Mona and I had ridden the school bus together for so many years. She and my Sister did so many things together, especially in dealing with flowers. I remember she helped us so much back in the day, with our Social Security.
